UNITED: The Future of Design

In May of 2026, The Modern College of Design announced it’s upcoming closure, reportedly due to enrollment challenges. As such, all staff and students were immediately dismissed, and the building closed. However, on top of the closing of the school, all in-person graduation events were cancelled and made remote.

The Modern has meant so much to me, not just for my education, but for the friendships and connections I was able to make during my 3 years there. Though we weren’t graduating until next year, my classmates found it unfair that our friends in the classes above and below us weren’t going to be properly celebrated as the final graduating class. As such, Issa Munoz-Chan, Emily Woodworth and I decided to come together and try to organize our own celebration.

UNITED took place on June 7th, 2026, featuring 20 graduates from the last class of The Modern College of Design, and was a remarkable success for being done with such a small team and limited time. I had the great privilege of creating the video to kick off the ceremony, which can be seen below.
